If you see that huge code base, that you can run without modification, but are not quite sure how to change anything without breaking everything, here is a tip:

* Modify something.

If you found the main entry point to the program, add a print statement, and try to see it in action.

* Modify something related to your bug.

That will lead you to look at the code related to your goal, and adding debugging statements there will help you understand which methods are run, and from where

* Break something.

If you make a change that you can see makes things wrong will make you more confident that you can change things in the code. Don't push those changes ☺.

Refactor something.

Probably parts of the code are obsolete, not efficiently coded, or could be easily improved (e.g. using smart pointers in C++, using list comprehension in python, etc). Start small, but stay focused on the issue you're working on, you will probably learn things along the way

If this function is buggy and your task is to fix it, then you will have a base to assess whether your fix works (and your test should probably fail before writing the fix), and a way to ensure no one will ever make it regress
